Magical Connections – Morrell House

Magical Connections is a short documentary filmed in a care home in York in collaboration with the charity Musical Connections, which provides inclusive music sessions to people living with dementia. The film, funded by Joseph Rowntree Foundation, has been filmed by Simona with support from the residents themselves, who have used iPads to both film portions of the film, and to experiment with creative apps.

The aim of the project has been to empower residents to explore the use of iPads for self expression, so that some of the benefits of the weekly music sessions could be extended to the rest of week and to individual activities conducted by carers with residents.

The film shows how much liveliness, dialogue, and fun is generated when creativity is introduced in care home settings. Residents are involved in music and crafts, energised, and able to enjoy the present moment. The film has been screened in the care home and at a community event in York. DVDs of the film have been distributed to family members as well.

Magical Connections is currently being repeated at a different care home in York, involving different residents.
